The UK has one of the worst child pedestrian death rates in Western Europe

Traffic is one of the biggest killers of children and young people. In fact, it is the biggest killer of 15-19 year-olds, and the second biggest killer of children aged 5-14

In the UK in 2005, 2,197 children on foot and 537 on bikes were killed or seriously injured under the age of 16. That’s an appalling 53 children a week and seven children each day. Road deaths are a tragic waste of young life.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
For some children, miniature motorcycles, miniature quad bikes and scooters are the current ‘must-have’ toys. But although they might seem like a bit of fun, they are in fact powerful machines, which can kill or seriously injure the children who use them.
The bikes, which are powered by an electric motor or engine are, in law, lightweight powered motor vehicles. They can be extremely powerful for their size and are capable of traveling at speeds up to 60mph. It is incredible that children younger than two years have been involved in very serious incidents on such vehicles. Children not much older than this are actually driving the machines themselves.
